Liquid Nitrogen Experiments: Shattering Pennies!

01:48
Some pennies are mostly copper and some pennies are mostly zinc. What happens to the different materials when they are cooled with liquid nitrogen and then hit with a hammer? For those of you who think that what we are doing in this video is illegal, we direct you to Title 18, Chapter 17 of the U.S. Code (Coins and Currency). What's forbidden is the 'fraudulent alteration and mutilation of coins.' There's nothing fraudulent in what we are doing. We aren't trying to make pennies look like dimes or something. There are plenty of (legal) machines at amusement parks and fairs that'll happily smash one of your pennies into a souvenir. No one will send you to jail for that as long as you don't try to pass it off as something that is isn't. No fraud, no crime.

Liquid Nitrogen Cooled Dry Ice in Water!

02:19
Dry ice that's been super-cooled in liquid nitrogen is dropped in a container of water! How much fog will -that- make? For the scientifically curious: You might have noticed a brief period of rapid boiling when the super-cooled dry ice was first placed in the water. If it's too cold to sublimate, what caused the boiling? Let us know what you think, and how your idea can be tested (perhaps in a future video!), in the comments!

Cells vs. Liquid Nitrogen!

01:56
Let's say you've carelessly dunked your hand into a vat of liquid nitrogen and let it freeze solid. Every movie you've seen where this happens tells you that your hand will shatter like fine china should you bump it into something. If you're extremely careful, will your hand be okay once it thaws out? We'll explore this issue, using flower and onion cells rather than our hands! A special thanks to Michelle, Olga and Nick for the use of their microscopes. The College of William and Mary's Surface Characterization Lab rocks!
